I am pleased to present an online-only issue with a focus on antimicrobials and COVID-19. This 100-page issue is launched to coincide with the EAHP Congress due to be held in Vienna in March 2022. At the Congress, a separate print issue will be published which focuses on antimicrobial resistance. The issue was compiled by guest editor Professor Jonathan Cooke and readers are recommended to look for this on the EJHP website (https://ejhp.bmj.com).

We publish online issues from time to time in order to reduce the pressure on the backlog for print issues which is currently 10–12 months from acceptance to appearing in print. There is benefit for authors in that the full text of included papers can be accessed as free to view for a period of time. This increases the visibility of these authors and also has the potential to increase citations.
