According to the European Commission, every year more than 600 000 infections occur, of which 25 000 patients die in the European Union as a result of resistant bacteria; globally the number of deaths could be as high as 700 000 per year.1 Meanwhile, the situation is feared to be intensified by the almost 50% increase in global antibiotic consumption since the year 2000.2 During these last decades, a dramatic increase has been observed in the ability of microorganisms to withstand antimicrobial treatments aimed against them.
